Transferring Stripe and Givebutter Ownership/Access for Programs Moving to a New Fiscal Sponsor or Standalone 501c3
Overview
When a fiscally sponsored program transitions to a new fiscal sponsor or becomes an independent 501(c)(3) organization, we must transfer ownership and access for platforms like Stripe and Givebutte. This article explains NOPI’s process for transferring access and the steps required to ensure a smooth transition.
1. Can NOPI transfer full ownership of the Givebutter connected Stripe account to our new fiscal sponsor or independent 501(c)(3)?
NOPI cannot entirely transfer ownership of your Stripe account. However, we can add your new fiscal sponsor, executive director, or an authorized person (if you have become a standalone 501c3) to the account. This will allow them to update the banking information for future payouts.
2. How will the transition of Stripe access and banking information work?
Once your new fiscal sponsor or assigned person is added to the Stripe account, they can update the banking information for future payouts. While NOPI will assist in adding these new users, ownership and control of the Stripe account will remain with NOPI until the transfer process is completed.
3. What happens to donor data after the transfer?
As the IRS requires, NOPI must keep donor data records for at least 3 years. We will export this data in a CSV file for our archives, ensuring compliance with IRS regulations. These records will be retained securely in case they are needed for any future reference or audit.
4. What happens to our Givebutter account after the transfer?
Once the transfer of Stripe access is complete and donor data has been safely backed up, NOPI will remove its users from the Givebutter account. At that point, NOPI will no longer have access to the Givebutter account or any associated data. All necessary information will have been handed over to your new fiscal sponsor or executive director, who will manage the account going forward.

The duration of the transfer process depends on several factors, such as how quickly your new fiscal sponsor or executive director is added to the account and updates the banking information. Our team will work with you to ensure a smooth transition and minimize disruptions. While the process can take some time, we aim to make it as seamless as possible.
